These are all live in the room, first takes, the first time this particular trio ever played together, in my living room home studio, at about Ten in the morning.
It has always been an integral part of the jazz tradition to improvise on tunes drawn on the "Popular Song" repertoire. Over the years these tunes have been codified into a "Great American Songbook," but it is, and always has been, my very strong opinion that said songbook doesn't end at some nebulous date in the golden past, but continues (theoretically) to this day. I see no spiritual difference between Miles Davis playing "Bye Bye Blackbird" (or for that matter, "Human Nature,") and myself playing "Love's In Need Of Love Today," and similarly, I see no difference between Bill Evans choosing to play on music from movies and TV series he dug ("Love Theme From Spartacus," or perhaps "Suicide is Painless," from M.A.S.H.,) and myself choosing to play on some music from Star Trek.
There will be much more to come from this trio.
